Jean Seder, Voices of Kensington: Vanishing Mills, Vanishing Neighborhoods, (Ardmore, 1982).
Living in Kensington and working in her parents textile mill, Seder has gathered the stories from seventeen other neighbors, mainly employed in the textile industry but also a shoemaker, meat store manager and teacher. These voices are as close as we can come to understanding the lives of the tens of thousands of men and women who worked in the hundreds of mills in Kensington. Seder laments: "But today we are in our sixties. None of our sons is interested in coming into the business. Our building is surrounded by shells of old factories. Our watchmen wage an endless battle with the children of the neighborhood who harass them and vandalize the building. Rolls of tapestry are stolen. The neighbors surrounding us now seem hostile. They refuse to be responsible for their children."
